Then think you right: I am not what I am.
I would you were as I would have you be!

(William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night)

In Love We Trust

The Twelfth Night, directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna, is a staging of one of William Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, viewed from the perspective of gender roles. In Jarzyna’s interpretation, this Renaissance comedy of errors becomes a contemporary story about love that transcends the boundaries of gender and sexual preferences, changing everyone and everything. As character Olivia puts it, love is like a plague that hits unexpectedly, leaving people vulnerable. Similarly, a non-binary person is vulnerable to their true nature. Between the lines of poetic love confessions lies a drama of those seeking a language to express their hidden selves.

The play is set in a luxurious resort hotel Iliria, visited by an aristocratic couple Orsino and Olivia for the weekend with their entourage of assistants and friends. The purpose of the trip is to save their troubled marriage. When Viola, a non-binary girl, appears at the hotel, the plans of the aristocratic couple spiral out of control.

The Twelfth Night explores gender roles and their impact on human relationships. What is sexuality? Does gender define love and desire? How capable are we of stepping out of the societal roles that culture has created for us? Has the freedom that our countries fought for in the last decade of the 20th century transformed into the freedom of individuals to choose who they are?
