A Little History of Inequality
At a time when history repeats itself like a bad déjà vu, when capitalism mutates into techno-feudalism, enabling financial elites to amass astronomical wealth while those in power grow ever more arrogant as they create a society of insurmountable inequalities, we cannot help but ask: has anything remained of civil rights, freedoms, and equality and where? Can theatre – caught between digital, almost serf-like identities and the charged, physical presence of bodies in protest – still serve as a social kaleidoscope exposing the historical myths of natural hierarchy and the “earned” accumulation of private capital?
A Little History of Inequality, directed by Miloš Lolić, draws from the graphic novel by Claire Alet and Benjamin Adam, an unconventional adaptation of Thomas Piketty’s Capital and Ideology which re-examines pressing global issues. The play opens a can of social and philosophical questions, drawing on some of the most significant historical, economic, and political references. Inspired by a carousel of historical travesty – hidden or out in the open – this production invites reflection, a re-evaluation of humanist ideals, and a redefinition of social solidarity.
